Depression is one of the leading causes of disability. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among 15-29-year-olds. People with severe mental health conditions die prematurely due to preventable physical conditions. More specifically, mental health illnesses spike during disasters and conflicts.<\/p><p>Communities and individuals during and after conflicts and disasters are at higher risks for psychological distress and mental health conditions. These conflicts and disasters create an overwhelming, chaotic, and uncertain environment. Communities are often trying to cope with losing their home, community, loved ones, and livelihoods. That is why it is International Medical Relief\u2019s (IMR) goal to go beyond the medical condition in order to treat each patient holistically. While international trips stopped during the pandemic pausing IMR\u2019s traditional weekly international medical missions around the world, IMR still found a way to help. IMR\u2019s volunteers provided 24\/7 medical support at an all women\u2019s shelter in downtown Denver. During this nontraditional medical deployment, IMR volunteers offered constant long term medical care to the Denver female homeless population. This care extended into managing mental health illnesses.\n<br><br>Below is one how one IMR paramedic volunteer describes his experience. \u201c Every shift is different. However, there are a few contents with every shift. Every shift you will sit down with at least one guest as they tell you their story and how they got to where they are. These stories often include loss, personal triumph, and perseverance. Every shift you will help at least one guest recover from an anxiety attack. You will provide healthy coping techniques. And almost every shift you will see a thank you. By that I mean you will see it in their eyes. You see their smile as you bring them a cup of water. You see their smile when you care. By emphasizing the importance of mental health education, this will promote the overall health and well-being of vulnerable individuals and communities. IMR\u2019s vision is to improve access to high quality mental health services that fit the needs of the specific community we are in, specifically in communities affected by disasters or conflicts. IMR provides community health education classes that focus specifically on mental health topics. We have conducted a children\u2019s program engaging the youth in therapeutic activities designed in cooperation with children therapists specializing in trauma and loss. We treated our 250,000th patient! The moment was tremendous and the team cried for happiness. Our patient was Alfredo. He is disabled and his mother has cared for him all of his 35 years. When he was born, she was told to leave him somewhere off of the side of the road, but she refused. Their community helps them and everybody pitches in. Alfredo can\u2019t speak or write, but he had tears in his eyes as we commemorated him as our 250,000th patient. That\u2019s such a simple word but after spending this past week on my first international trip it is the perfect word. I have spent the last week in what is (in my opinion) the most beautiful place in the world, the sights, sounds, smells, people, and feelings in Guatemala are absolutely incredible.
